Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Binghamton NY
653 PM EST Fri Dec 5 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
After a cold day today, temperatures will warm up a bit for the
weekend, but still remain below normal. The weather pattern
will remain active, with several chances for light snow over the
next week as several clipper systems push through.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
While it is still quite cold outside, temperatures have
rebounded this afternoon after a frigid start to the day. This
is due to the high pressure system sliding to the east,
resulting in a southerly return flow. Afternoon highs in the
20s are expected this afternoon. Clouds have increased a bit
ahead of schedule with most areas south of I-88 now mostly
cloudy. Areas north of I-88 will still remain partly to mostly
sunny at least until the late afternoon.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy for most areas ahead of an
approaching clipper system/shortwave. As a result, overnight
temperatures will be much milder compared to last night, with
lows in the teens to lower 20s. One thing worth monitoring is
the potential for some pockets of freezing drizzle to develop
overnight tonight, particularly across parts of Northeast PA to
the Catskills. The chances of this occurring is rather low, but
model soundings do indicate a strong inversion with a low cloud
deck beneath it, so the chances are not zero.
The aforementioned weak clipper system may spark a few flurries
or light snow showers along and north of the NY Thruway
corridor later in the day on Saturday. Otherwise, Saturday will
feature partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies with highs in the
30s. Some lingering snow showers will be possible Saturday
night, but otherwise it will remain mainly precipitation-free.
Lows are expected to be in the mid teens to mid 20s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
The zonal weather pattern will see yet another fast moving
shortwave/clipper system push through the area later in the day
on Sunday. This system is looking a little more potent with the
latest model runs and will push another cold front through. A
widespread 1 to 3 inch snow will be possible late Sunday through
Sunday evening, with the highest amounts across Central NY.
Also, behind the cold front will be a reinforcement of arctic
air just in time for start of the work week.
The aforementioned cold airmass will result in highs only in
the upper teens to mid 20s on Monday, followed by lows below
zero Monday night for some.
&&
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
We will remain in zonal flow through the week and another
clipper system pushes in midweek. The track of this system will
determine what precipitation will fall on Wednesday, with a
farther north track allowing warmer air to push in, possibly
bringing rain for Northeast PA. Either way, this system does not
look to be significant and any precipitation will likely be
light. The good news about the zonal weather pattern is that no
significant storm systems are expected and only minor snowfall
accumulations will be possible, even though we will likely see
several disturbances continue to push through during this
period.
&&
.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Low stratus has moved into NEPA and the Southern Tier leading to
MVFR conditions for AVP and BGM. ELM has risen to VFR for now
but upstream obs show cigs slowly lowering so MVFR cigs will
return most likely. ITH, SYR, and RME is seeing some downslope
winds so that will help keep cigs from forming or falling to
MVFR so VFR conditions are forecast. ITH may briefly see MVFR
cigs as previous obs have had some lowering but chances dwindle
after 3Z. A cold front moves in late tomorrow with some lower
cigs moving into SYR and RME before 0Z.
afternoon.
Outlook...
Sunday...Restrictions possible as a frontal system and scattered
snow showers approaches the region, mainly in the afternoon.
Monday...Becoming mainly VFR, but lingering restrictions
possible at the Central NY terminals due to lake effect clouds
and/or light snow showers in the morning.
Tuesday...Restrictions possible in scattered snow showers,
especially in the afternoon.
Wednesday...Restrictions possible as another frontal system
approaches the region.
